Working to Make DoD More Trustworthy

Back in June, we wrote about "Why We Shouldn’t Trust DOD to Tell Us What We Need to Know" and our work with Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). Since then, we have had some positive developments in the Senate. We sent a letter urging Senators to support an amendment by Senator Leahy.

Today, 38 groups wrote to the entire Senate urging Senators to support a proposed amendment by Senator Leahy that helps protect against DoD coverups (like the one in the Milner case), by requiring DoD to weigh whether there is an over-riding public interest in disclosing the information, and further protects public health and safety by tightening the definition of “critical infrastructure security information” to make it clear that the Secretary may withhold only information that could substantially increase effectiveness of a terrorist attack.

We urge you to contact your Senators and ask them to support Senator Leahy’s amendment.
