COVID-19 Pandemic: Correcting a Misconception About OTG and Reopen Plans

Dear Open Government Supporters,

The COVID-19 pandemic is having an impact on all of our lives right now.

How our nation ends the stay-at-home orders is striking a nerve around the country, with some people in support of America reopening as soon as possible and others urging for more caution.

Our organization’s name, Open The Government, might sound like we are in the “reopen” camp, but rest assured that my team and I would never advocate for an end to the current shutdown that would risk Americans’ health and safety.

Instead, our name, Open The Government, encapsulates who we are: an inclusive, nonpartisan coalition dedicated to advancing policies that create a more transparent government that is accountable to the American people first and foremost.

We’ve been around since 2003. So while our name might be a bit confusing at this time, our mission remains the same. Right now, we are doing our best to find out as much as we can about COVID-19, so that all of us can be better informed and that our government can be held accountable.

Advocating for government transparency and accountability is what we did before and during this COVID-19 pandemic, and what will hold our focus after.

Thank you for the opportunity to set the record straight.

Like all Americans, we are looking forward to a time when this dreadful coronavirus is a distant memory. Until then, please stay healthy and well.

Lisa Rosenberg
Executive Director, Open The Government
