Senate Should Adopt VA Whistleblower Protections

Yesterday, OpenTheGovernment.org joined the Government Accountability Project (GAP) and 35 other organizations in calling on the Senate to adopt the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) whistleblower protections that constitute Section 4 of the VA Accountability Act of 2015 (H.R. 1994). 

The House passed H.R. 1994 in July, and the Senate version of the bill remains in the Committee on Veterans' Affairs. The whistleblower protections would:

  • Require timely and transparent responses to whistleblower disclosures
  • Close loopholes that allow for retaliation against whistleblowers
  • Strengthen accountability for violations of merit system
  • Improve training on Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act to prevent whistleblower retaliation
