OTG applauds Senate’s introduction of S. 1, the For the People Act

Washington, D.C. – This afternoon, the U.S. Senate introduced the monumental pro-democracy reform bill, S. 1, the For the People Act. In response, Lisa Rosenberg, executive director of Open The Government released the following statement:

“Today’s introduction of S. 1, the For the People Act sends a powerful signal Congress is moving a step closer to passing a historic bill that provides solutions to reduce the deficit of trust in government by strengthening federal ethics oversight and instituting anti-corruption, ethics, and voting reforms that prioritize Americans’ interests.”

“We thank Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Rules Committee Chairwoman Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), for their leadership in introducing this critical legislation that aims to root out self-dealing practices that benefit special interests and secure voting rights for all eligible citizens so that our government fulfills the promise of an equitable democracy for all Americans.”

“The For the People Act has received overwhelming support across parties, amongst Americans, and lawmakers. We urge the Senate to swiftly pass the bill, which President Biden has already committed to signing into law once it passes the Senate, to restore the public’s belief in an inclusive and representative government that delivers on what the people need.”
