Not Fine: Trump continues target on IGs

On the removal of Glenn Fine as acting inspector general of the Department of Defense, and chair of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee appointed to oversee $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill.

Fine’s removal is especially troubling because it means Trump, who had been clear about his intentions to override inspectors general and bypass congressional oversight in the implementation of the relief fund, is taking concrete steps to ensure the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee operates as he sees fit.

With Fine’s dismissal from PRAC, Trump has removed a competent authority from the oversight equation; Congress should be alarmed by yet another target on inspectors general. Fine’s dismissal follows the retaliatory firing of Michael Atkinson as inspector general of the intelligence community, making clear that Trump sees inspectors general as unnecessary constraints of his power rather than as deterrents of misconduct, waste, fraud and abuse his administration sanctions.
