Yesterday, OpenTheGovernment joined The Constitution Project and several other organizations in calling for the Trump administration's nominee to head the Office of Legal Counsel - Stephen Engel - to answer important questions regarding the CIA's rendition, detention, and interrogation program. The letter asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold off on voting on Engel's nomination until he had committed to read the full Senate Torture Report, and sufficiently responded to questions on his involvement in a 2007 OLC memo on use of torture.
The request follows the deeply troubling news that executive branch agencies have begun returning their copies of the Senate Torture Report to Congress, and OTG's push for Engel to answer questions on secret law.
Despite opposition from Senate Judiciary Democrats, the Committee approved Engel's nomination on Thursday.
