Groups Discuss Making FOIA Work for the Public

Last week OpenTheGovernment.org brought together about 3 dozens advocates, litigators, journalists, and others to kick-start a more vibrant and better coordinated effort to make the (FOIA) work better for the public. During the sessions, participants discussed some of FOIA's most pressing issues and decided on areas where the community could work together to make the most progress over the next few years. Among the items on the agenda was a vision for the Office of Government Information Services, the FOIA Ombudsman; making more records available without having to file a FOIA; making sure agencies are not overly applying exemptions; and improving the federal government's record keeping practices. Be on the lookout for more information about the effort in the coming weeks.
