FOIA on the Fourth: A DC Request

I recently moved to DC, and I quickly became a frequent user of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. When biking home at dusk, I sometimes wondered about how safe I was on the trail. What did DC have planned to keep the users of the trail safe?

After a search of the otherwise-informative project webpage didn't turn up anything, I went to the DC Coalition on Open Government page for advice on filing my first DC FOI request. DCOG provided me with a great guide to the District's FOIA.

Your hometown might have resources like this. OpenTheGovernment.org has many state and local partners who have great knowledge of non-federal FOIA, including the National Freedom of Information Coalition, a great resource for all things state-FOI.

From there, I went to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and used their FOIA letter generator. After a few tweaks, my request was ready to go out to the District Department of Transportation and I could pick up my badge of honor.
