Comment on NRC proposed rule

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) proposed a new rule (published in the Federal Register on October 31, 2006) on protection of “Safeguards Information” (SGI), a type of Sensitive But Unclassified information (SBU). Read NRC’s press release on the proposed rule. The notice of the proposed rule is available here in the Federal Register.

The proposed rule was initially published Feb. 11, 2005. OMB Watch analyzed the initial rule here. NRC issued the revised rule because, “Changes in the threat environment have revealed the need to protect
as SGI additional types of security information held by a broader group
of licensees.” The revised rule also reflects the new requirements under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct).
