Coalition expresses concern over ICE Director statements on DHS use of private prisons joined a coalition of human rights, civil liberties, and faith groups in expressing “grave concern” over recent statements made by Immigrations Custom and Enforcement (ICE) Director Sarah Saldaña on DHS use of private prisons in immigration detention.

In her comments during a House Judiciary Committee ICE oversight hearing, Director Saldaña effectively rejected any change to DHS’ use of privately run detention facilities, despite the fact that a DHS advisory committee is currently conducting a review of the agency’s use of private prisons. The letter urges DHS to be more transparent about the committee’s review process, and to thoroughly consider crucial reforms to the immigration detention system.
