Bill to ban facial recognition demands bipartisan support

Note: On the introduction of bicameral legislation banning federal entities from using facial recognition technology by Senators Markey and Merkley, and Reps. Jayapal, Pressley, Lisa Rosenberg, executive director of Open The Government, made the following statement:

“By placing a full moratorium on a technology that is known to be inaccurate and racially biased, yet used by federal agencies, including law enforcement agencies across the country, Congress is taking bolder steps to protect Americans’ privacy and civil liberties.”

“As accounts about police use of the technology against protesters and to wrongfully arrest Americans increase, this long-awaited legislation demands bipartisan support. Now more than ever, the public needs a united Congress to establish clear and strong oversight of the use of facial recognition technology.”
