“I liked the idea of OpenTheGovernment.org because it was an opportunity to bring together coalitions and serve as a resource for investigative reporting….what I found successful was the groups work beautifully together. They really leverage their philanthropic dollars especially in getting news stories in the media, etc. I found it was a very open network of groups working in support of issues the public doesn’t even realize need to be investigated. You need to have organizations whose daily job is to go through all the morass and work on the things that will protect the public interest.
Without these groups, you would have a less democratic country, a news media that would be stymied more, especially with how much investigative reporting has been cut. So the groups serve a huge purpose of shining a light on very complex issues."
