OpenTheGovernment.org’s Sunshine Week Event on March 15

Sunshine Week 2013 will take place March 10th to 16th, throughout Washington, DC, and across the United States. On Friday, March 15th, OpenTheGovernment.org and the First Amendment Center will host a Sunshine Week celebration of National Freedom of Information Day at the Newseum in Washington, DC. Sunshine Week in the Government

The sun will shine a little brighter in the halls of two branches of government this Sunshine Week. Below are events the government has scheduled thus far. Be on the lookout for notices of hearings from other committees and agencies, including the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform, and visit SunshineWeek.org for a full line-up of events.

Agencies Not Meeting Administration's Sunshine Week Commitments

This March we welcomed the Obama Administration's announcement that they planned to take some concrete steps to improve the administration of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). In particular we appreciated their guidance to agencies on releasing useful information proactively. Unfortunately, however, it appears many agencies didn't get the memo/blog post; of the twenty-nine agencies who produced substantive open government plans last year, only six are actually making all the specified information available.
